The emotions Nanami has for Komaeda are both extremely simple and extremely complicated. (Hold on, I just dropped all my words on the floor, uhh...)

Nanami blames herself for a lot of what went down at Hope's Peak. Even though she wasn't directly responsible for the carnage, she was appointed class rep and did take on the responsibility that came with that position. In the few weeks during which Komaeda was still with the 77th, she cared about him just as much as the rest of her classmates. She also sensed both how he pushed people away, and also how their classmates were more than happy to ostracize him for his weirdnesses.

Didn't matter. He's still her classmate. He's one of the dozen or so people she cares about most in the world. She tried to reach out to him and connect - but she's still new at the socialization thing, and it wasn't enough to bring him into the group cohesively. From there, and what she believes to be her own failure, originated Komaeda's attack on the auditorium; his and Chisa's subsequent departure, and the 77th never being whole again.

She feels like she has a lot of ground to make up. He didn't really get just how much she cared about him in life; she doesn't want to make that mistake again in the afterlife. But there's an invisible wall there that she can't manage to get through, just yet. Komaeda's clearly Been Through some stuff, both at Yogen and before then. Hinata's spared her the details of the Ultimate Despairs but otherwise gave her a broad overview of the timeline; still, she knows there's a lot she's missing. It's both in the knowledge that she's missing several years of Komaeda's experiences, between graduation and the Jabberwock killing game, and also in the ways that Komaeda acts - he's both more familiar with people and more closed off, depending on the situation.

She knows it's gonna take work to get to know him. But it's work she'll put in every time. She cares about him quite a lot, and even in his unpredictability there's a familiarity to him that she appreciates. Whether or not she's able to understand his heart fully, she's glad she can be his friend and see him again, even if just for a little while.

EDIT: and I should mention! Nanami hasn't met Midori yet but I'm extremely excited for that, because while AInami went into meeting Midori completely blind, RLnami's been warned about Midori's dangerousness by her roomie, SO I'm very interested to see what happens there.
